Sika Deer

British Sika deer are of Japanese origins, and apparently the Sika of the New Forest are descendants of a pair of Sika deer that escaped from the Beaulieu Estate in the early 1900s.

It is also believed that the Sika within the New Forest are some of the purest Sika Deer in the country in that they havent hybridised with Red Deer.

They are relatively few in number and stay in the southern half of the Forest, around the Brockenhurst area.

Hinds can be easily confused with roe deer because of their similar size and coat colour - a gingery-red in summer turning to a greyish-brown in the winter months. Stags tend to be a much darker brown, with a scruff of hair on the front of the neck. Sika's often have pale spots either side of a dark stripe running along the spine. When the spots fade in winter the line of darker hair remains. A white rump is also a distinguishing feature.

There are around 2,700 different types of Fungus in the New Forest.I think it might be a little while before they all appear here!

Here is a selection i have found on my travels so far.

Please note im am no expert in this area and have done the best i can (with a little help from some friends) to name them,so please forgive me if there are any errors.

Marwell Wildlife although not in the New Forest is a place very close to my heart.I visit the Zoo often and have been lucky enough to recently have had one of my pictures used for publicity appearing in thier 2011 calendar and even on the side of buses!.

Keep coming back here as i have lots of pictures to come.

Fallow Deer

Fallow deer are the most common of the New Forest deer species (thought to have been introduced into Britain by the Normans) and have distinctive markings during certain times of the year - the classic 'Bambi' spots can be seen on the flanks of the deer during the summer months, along with distinctive black stripes around the tail area. The bucks can grow impressive antlers, the span of which can be up to 4 or 5 times the width of the animal's head. Mid October is an excellent time to watch fallow deer, when the bucks can be heard making a deep, throaty bark.

These deer are widespread throughout the New Forest and, although shy, are numerous enough to be easily seen during a quiet forest walk.

Red Deer

The Red Deer of the New Forest, though the biggest of all British deer species, are also elusive and comparatively few in number (numbers are kept to about 100, with an annual cull carried out by the Forestry Commission).

The open heathland around the Burley area and Ober Heath, near Brockenhurst, are good places to see these majestic animals that are more associated with the highlands of Scotland than southern England. The deer are most active at dawn and dusk.During the Rut the bucks can be heard making a very distinctive and throaty roaring noise, but for most of the year are not very vocal. Fights between bucks during the rut can be fierce and sometimes fatal.

Roe Deer

Roe deer are numerous in the New Forest but their smaller size makes them harder to see, especially amongst the thicker undergrowth. Roe deer have distinctive black noses and for much of the year they have a uniform gingery-brown coat.
A roe buck's antlers are small with few branches, unlike the fallow's.

Roe deer are very alert animals and will move quickly if disturbed by passers-by, disappearing into areas of thicker vegetation.
Neighbouring farmland and open fields around the New Forest National Park are good areas to spot roe deer that have wandered onto the land in search of new grazing opportunities.
